Eating 100% clean during the holidays might seem like an impossible feat unless it’s already part of your lifestyle. For most of us, the holidays are about joy, celebration, and connection. And guess what? That includes the food!
When patients ask me if it’s okay to enjoy their favorite treats during holiday celebrations, my answer is a resounding “Absolutely!”
Here’s why: Celebrations centered around food have been part of human history across every culture. Think about tables filled with rich, indulgent dishes, wine, sweets, laughter, music, dancing, and heartfelt moments of fellowship. When you deprive yourself of participating in these traditions, it can feel like you’re missing out or not fully part of the event.
I encourage my patients to lean into the joy of celebration—including the food and beverages. The key is understanding that this is a moment to be celebrated, not a lifestyle to be adopted.
The 80/20 Rule for Balance
If you aim to make healthy choices 80% (or more) of the time, your body will thank you. This consistency helps reduce inflammation and maintain balance, so when you enjoy those holiday indulgences, your body is less likely to feel the negative impacts. This is what balance looks like—being mindful, yet still fully enjoying life’s moments.
How to Minimize Post-Holiday Bloat
If you’re concerned about feeling “blah” after the holidays, here are three simple practices to help minimize post-holiday bloat and keep you feeling your best:
Hydrate with a Gallon of Water
Proper hydration flushes out toxins and keeps swelling down. Aim for about a gallon of water a day if you’re an adult.
Enjoy 1-2 Granny Smith Apples Daily
Apples are packed with pectin fiber and nutrients that support your body’s natural detox pathways.
Take a Walk Outside
A leisurely stroll outdoors not only clears your mind and cleanses your lungs, but walking also keeps your lymphatic system moving. Plus, holiday decorations make for a festive view!
